Information about the sights :
The Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi, (1876-1957) was a central figure of the modern movement and a pioneer of abstraction. His sculpture is noted for its visual elegance and sensitive use of materials, combining the directness of peasant carving with the sophistication of the Parisian avant-garde. In the 1930s Brancusi worked on many public sculpture projects among them the installation at Tirgu Jiu, of his Gate of the Kiss, Table of Silence and a 100-foot tall cast iron version of Endless Column.
Horezu
The specific assets of the Horezu area guided the inhabitants to develop specific Romanian handicraft activities, as pottery, wood carving, handmade fabrics, sacred image painting, etc. the pottery has been inherited in time within the potter families which have perpetuated the techniques of clay making. The main motifs used in trimming the Horezu ceramics have been inspired from the local flora and fauna: the fir, the snowdrop, the rooster of Hurez, the snake, etc
Hurezi Monastery
The Holy Monastery of Hurezi (1690-1697) is located in a spectacularly picturesque area, an area abounding with history and spirituality. Not far from Ramnicu Valcea (40 km), only 3 km from the town of Horezu, the Holy Monastery rises majestically as a stern but at the same time welcoming fortress, offering a ray of light and a feeling of Romanian spirit. The centerpiece of the entire Hurezi complex is the Great Church, the hub around which all life in the monastery revolves. An element of unique beauty is, besides the exquisite painting and the harmonious architecture, the iconostasis, carved in gilded wood.
